The Basin Record Newsletter Vol.5 Issue 1
Hiking the High Line Bill Hurst was born Nov. 8, 1927 and enjoyed climbing many mountains in and near Western Canada. He died at the age of 85 on June 3, 2013. Bill took many pictures during his mountaineering trips. The Columbia Basin Institute is fortunate to have the opportunity to preserve Bill’s slides, many of them featuring vantage points usually only seen by the few who have trekked to see them in person. A 1970 issue of “The Kootenay Karabiner”, a newsletter produced by the Kootenay Mountaineering Club, has this to say about their hike at Mt. McQuarrie - Sunrise Mt.: “Everyone en- joyed their lunch hour while Bill Hurst was near standing on his head trying to rescue his jar of peanut butter which had managed to drop out of sight between some boulders. No way was he going to pollute the mountain with peanut butter!” In that same news- letter Bill wrote an article titled “Return to the Royal Group and the Second Ascent of Mt. King George”. An excerpt reads: “The summit was reached at 11:30 a.m. and for myself, the fulfillment of a wish I had held since first seeing excellent oblique air photo of the Royal Group in a National Geographic magazine (Oct . 1926, p. 412) over 20 years ago”. 0047.0469 - Mt. Sir Donald Doctor Green Doctor F.W. Green came to the East Kootenay in 1898 as a contract doctor for the Canadian Pacific Railway, caring for men working on the construction of the Crowsnest Railway. He stayed for the rest of his career to work with Dr. King and the St. Eugene Hospital, providing medical services to the Cranbrook area. In July 2014 the F.W. Green Medical Centre on Baker St. closed its doors. The Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History was invited to come in and remove the historical material which details some of the area’s earliest medical undertakings. We will photograph and scan the material, make suggestions regard- ing long - term conservation, and return all the original material to the new clinic being opened in the Cranbrook Mall. It is the Columbia Basin Institute’s intention to eventually make all of this very interesting material available to the public on specially designed web pages at www.basininstitute.org. 0263.0003 - Dr. F.W.
