"Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn more about the contributions of Canadians of Asian descent. This group throughout our history has done so much to make Canada the amazing country we share today," said Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth Bardish Chagger. Early Asian immigrants helped build and found our nation, and from the beginning, resilience, resolve, and perseverance have been present in their contributions to Canadian Society. Discrimination has been prevalent throughout history, as is seen in this excerpt from the Nelson Economist (1898). "It is evident that the miners of Sandon do not want John Chinaman, but the method of getting rid of the despised Celestial, while it possesses the merit of being most effective, may conflict with the laws of the land". Underlying racism and hatred persist for marginalized groups. Through campaigns calling for action to stop discrimination, healing and progress toward an equal society can become the norm instead of the exception.
